The “Competition Ladder”.
For most athletes, the first step on the “Competition Ladder” is Club competition – maybe internal Club events or competing for the Club in Leagues.
The second step on the ladder is County competition which is where the Warwickshire County events fit in – our Championships.
The third rung on the Competition Ladder is Inter County competition which is when an athlete competes for Warwickshire against other Counties.
Most, but not all, of the Inter County competitions are organised by the UKCAU (UK Counties Athletic Union).
The UKCAU web site can be found at www.UKCAU.co.uk
The Inter County Cross Country Championships.
This event is held at Prestwold Hall near Loughborough. The event includes races for the U13, U15, U17, U20 and Senior age groups for both genders.
Entry is by selection only by the Team Manager of each age group. You can see a list of the Team Managers in the “About WCAA/Officers” page of this web site. The County Cross Country Championships are the principle selection criteria. The first three eligible athletes to cross the line in each race are automatically selected and then the remainder of the team is chosen by the team managers but the County reserves the right to disregard any athlete, even if they qualify automatically, if they have been disrespectful to the County or its team managers in the past.
Regardless of if you are selected automatically, finish close behind the first three in a race or do not compete in the County Championships at all, it helps the Team Managers if you confirm your availability (or not) for the Inter County match. You can mail them direct or through this web site.
The Inter County Fell Running Championships.
There are usually two separate Inter County Fell Championships – one for Seniors and one for Juniors.
Warwickshire County is not very strong in Fell Racing which is not surprising because our highest hill would be considered nothing more than a bump to most fell runners. Even so we have some very keen and very capable athletes and we do our best to support them. Athletes who wish to represent Warwickshire in the Fell Inter County events should enter the events themselves and then contact the team Manager (see the “About WCAA/Officers” page of this web site) for more information and a vest if required.
The Senior Men and Senior Women Inter County Track and Field Match.
This event is normally held in Manchester nowadays and it is synonymous with the England Championships. An athlete is, at one and the same time, competing for a medal in both events provided s/he is eligible. The Inter County match scores are derived from the England Championships results.
Athletes do not need to be selected by Warwickshire but instead should enter the England Championships themselves. If you enter the England Championships you should remember to state your County affiliation and let us know if you would like a Warwickshire County vest. Although the match is for Seniors, U20s who meet the minimum entry requirements can enter as seniors.
The U13/U15 Boys and Girls Inter County Track and Field Match.
This is an annual event held every September. The hosting rotates around the 7 competing Counties and it is Lincolnshire’s turn to host next. The seven Counties that take part are Derbyshire, Humberside, Leicestershire&Rutland, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Warwickshire.
Entry is by selection only and, although the principle criteria is the ability of the athlete, preference may be given to those who support the County Track and Field Championships. The Team Manager (see the “About WCAA/Officers” page of this web site) selects the Warwickshire team using Power of 10 and the County Championships results but it would help if you let him know that you would like to be selected at.
Inter County Race Walking.
Information to follow
Inter County Road Running.
There are no longer any Inter County Road Running events because there is such a huge choice of races that it is difficult to encourage athletes from every County to target any one race.
